How to Properly Clean Your Gas Fireplace
by Alexis Sanders
There is something about a gas fireplace that adds a certain level of warmth and character to any home. On the other hand, if your fireplace is not cleaned regularly, it can make your house feel old and dirty. Fortunately, gas fireplaces only really need a thorough cleaning once per year. After the winter season has ended is usually an ideal time since the fireplace probably gets used most during winter. Here are some tips on how to effectively clean your gas fireplace to not only make it look great, but to keep it running smoothly.
Preparation
Cleaning a fireplace is really not a difficult task, despite what many believe. Nonetheless, there are a couple precautionary steps you should take to stay safe. First, you need to turn off your fireplace gas valve. The next step is to remove the glass doors (if you have them), any logs, the rack, and fireplace burner. If you are not sure how to remove any parts, consult your fireplace manual first for detailed instructions.
Cleaning
You can start by cleaning the glass with some glass cleaner and wiping with paper towels or a rag. Be sure not to use any harsh or abrasive cleaners to clean your fireplace glass as it could scratch or damage the surface. Next, you can wipe down the outside of the fireplace and the fireplace rack with a damp rag. There is no need to use any special cleaners on these areas. After that, get your vacuum and use its hose extension to suck up any soot and debris.
Once the glass door and rack have been sufficiently cleaned, the next step is to clean the gas valve. It is best to clean the gas valve on a yearly basis as it can get clogged and effect its performance. Simply use a damp cloth and wipe the gas valve to remove and dirt or accumulated soot.
Next, you will want to clean the fireplace vents which can become quite dirty. Remove and clumps of soot or debris from the vents to ensure they are not clogged. Then, wipe down the vents with a damp cloth. Keeping the vents clear is the best way to ensure that the smoke is safely routed through the chimney. If you ever notice smoke from the fireplace coming into the house, your clogged vents are the likely culprit.
A gas fireplace adds a classic touch to any living room, assuming they are maintained and cleaned regularly. The warmth a fireplace adds to your house is well worth the time it takes to clean it. Remember, it only needs a thorough cleaning once a year and periodic minor cleanings on a quarterly basis.
