Victorian Fireplaces - 10 Restoration Tips to Accessorise Your Antique Fireplace

by Richard Billington

We've come up with our top ten tips to make your Victorian fireplace more at home.

Patterned Carpets - the right choice of carpet can really help you get the Victorian look in your home restoration. In Victorian times they always used high quality carpet. Finding traditional Victorian patterns is important but try to think about the texture of the carpet too.

Polished Floor Boards - wooden floors are hugely popular at the moment. Though if you're original floorboards aren't up to scratch resist the urge to opt for the lower cost laminate flooring. They have too high a sheen and will look to clean and new. The best option is to find some reclaimed floor boards but if this proves too expensive solid block flooring can often end up not costing much more than laminate.

Tiled Kitchen and Halls - in the high traffic areas of the house tiles prove the hardest wearing surface. If you are lucky your hall way might have the original tiles underneath your carpet. Checkerboard always looks authentic and herringbone tiles can often look impressive.

Rich Dark Colours - the Victorian's loved ruby reds and forest greens. They may be a little dark compared to the beige that dominates most refurbished house but in the right setting they can look fantastic. If the thought of a deep coloured room worries you it can often work on just one wall or above a dado rail.

Flock Wallpaper - The increased manufacturing that became available during the early 20th century meant mass produced wallpaper graced many Victorian walls. Flock was one of the most popular patterns and many modern wallpapers are available that are inspired by the past.

Plump Furniture - when it came to upholstery more was more. If it looks overstuffed, it probably is at the upholstered to the right level. There are plenty or suitable furniture out there in salvage yards and antique fairs. If the chair or sofa is looking a little tired there are lots of experience upholsters who will professionally sort it out for you.

Patterned or Velvet Fabric - your choice of drapes can have a really effect on the atmosphere of a room. We wouldn't recommend draping fabric from the mantelpiece as was popular at the time as it's an accident waiting to happen.

30cm Skirting Board - the right choice of skirting board, dado rail or coving can make a room. Victorian tended to steer clear of the white gloss that tends to grace skirting boards nowadays so feel free to experiment.
