The traditional fireplaces were very large; the average width was 4 feet and they were as much as 3 feet deep. These were the main source of heat in some homes so they had to be large to accommodate the spaces they were heating. Now with the modern fireplaces, all you need is a simple exhaust pipe that is used similarly in gas stoves and most hot water tanks.
